Dwight House Group Home

Dwight House group home program, formerly of ALSO-Cornerstone, provides housing and psychosocial rehabilitation to adults with prolonged mental illness who are at risk of hospitalization or homelessness, and who are poor. 

The program is designed to serve clients in need of 24-hour support due to significant disabilities in social role and daily living functioning.  Located in a residential neighborhood near the Yale University campus and the Connecticut Mental Health Center, Dwight House is convenient to many community services.  The house provides furnished, single bedroom accommodations along with a shared living room, recreational lounge, bathrooms, and kitchen facilities.  Services within this congregate style community residence are comprehensive in scope but specially tailored to individual client needs. 

The rehabilitation component includes instruction in activities of daily living include:

  • Assistance with symptom management
  • Supervision of self-administration of medications
  • Guidance on budgeting and money management
  • Shared responsibility for the care of the house
  • Participation in group events like meal preparation and weekly house meeting
  • Orientation to community resources. 

All residents are expected to participate in a schedule of in-house and community activity such as day psychosocial programs, vocational training, or other activities that are appropriate to the individual’s needs, abilities, and interests.  The goal is to assist individuals suffering from severe mental illness move from hospitalization to residence in the community, and to increase skills to live as independently as possible.

The residential support services are integrated with clinical, psychosocial and vocational services offered by other providers in the Mental Health Network of South Central Connecticut.  Priority admission is offered to clients referred through the network.  Dwight House also provides clinical services to interested clients through the former Also-Cornerstone Out-Patient Clinic located at 205 Orange Street, New Haven.  There is a monthly fee for housing, board, and services.
